Bicycle Friendly America

League of Ameicn Bicyclists Logo

Founded in 1880, the League of American Bicyclists is the oldest bicycle advocacy organization in the United States. Its mission is "to lead the movement to create a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone." The League promotes its mission through programs focused on People, Places, and Policy, and holds the yearly National Bike Summit.

A premier certification is offered by the Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) program which provides a roadmap, hands-on assistance and recognition for states, communities, universities, and businesses to make cycling a real transportation and recreation option for all people.

New Haven Coalition for Active Transportation (NCAT) is committed to working with the City of New Haven, a silver level Bicycle Friendly Community, to dramatically expand the number of businesses and universities that are "Bicycle Friendly" and want to hear from you! The more universities, businesses, and organizations in New Haven that are "Bicycle Friendly," the more powerful the effort will be to make the streets safer for everyone whether walking or riding bicycles. Together, we can help move Connecticut up from its current ranking of 20th in the nation as a Bicycle Friendly State.

NCAT Can:

  1. Offer a presentation to inspire employees and students to apply for the coveted designation of "Bicycle Friendly."

  2. Assign an experienced member of NCAT to explain and assist with the application.

  3. Help organize events such as bike education classes on site or lunchtime bike rides. The possibilities are unlimited!
