Over eighty participants braved the cold on January 4th for a hike on the proposed Shoreline Greenway Trail from New Haven to East Haven. This multiuse path will connect to downtown New Haven and the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. The group started their Winter hike at the Canal Dock Boathouse, the confluence of several multiuse trails along the beautiful New Haven coast.
Speakers at the First Saturday Hike talked about New Haven history, the natural environment, and public parks along the route. The hike was co-hosted by several organizations that support this New Haven multiuse trail including Shoreline Greenway Trail, New Haven Coalition for Active Transportation, New Haven Bioregional Group, New Haven Friends of the Farmington Canal Greenway, and New Haven Climate Movement.
The City of New Haven announced the Shoreline Greenway Trail's new section in March 2024 with construction starting in 2025. Since that announcement there have been several popular hikes and bike rides along the proposed route. Community members and advocates attending the events are excited about the new car free connection for those biking, walking, and hiking - both for transportation and healthy recreation.
The trail will be an important regional connection. Towns East of New Haven are working together to build and connect their sections of the car-free Shoreline Greenway Trail from New Haven through Madison. Future greenway walks, events, and public meetings will be announced by the New Haven Coalition for Active Transportation and the Shoreline Greenway Trail.
