Classes and Rides

NCAT offers FREE classes for every level of experience, from beginning to balance through advanced skills and social group rides. We just added Ride New Haven e-bike share classes to the mix.

 

Our certified League Cycling Instructors are excited to ride with you and provide educational support toward whatever goals you have on a bike.

Don't have a bike? You can request a loaner bike and a bike helmet when you register for a class or ride.

  • *** NEW CLASS *** Sat, Sept 21, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm, Bike Skills 204, e-Bike Share Class, Stetson Branch Library: Ages 18+. Learn about the Ride New Haven bike share system. Set up your new account, learn how to unlock a bike and start a ride, lock up your bike and end the ride, and safely ride an e-bike. You will need a smart phone that connects to the internet and a credit or debit card to set up your account. This class qualifies low income New Haven residents for a 1-year Ride New Haven bike share membership. Register here

  • Sat, Sept 21, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm, Bike Skills 102: Learn-to-Ride for Adults and Teens, Stetson Branch Library: Free group class for adults and mature teens who are ready to ride. Doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 80, we’ll get you rolling in no time. With our safe, easy, effective method, Learn to Ride students learn how to balance, pedal, start, stop, and steer a bike, as well as adjust a helmet for proper fit. Most people learn to ride in one session, but even if they don’t, they’ll leave equipped with an easy, low-stress way to teach themselves—or, they can join us for another free class! Register here

  • Mon, Sept 23, 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm, Bike Skills 101: Learn-to-Ride for Kids, Stetson Branch Library: Free group class for children age 5 and up who are ready to ditch their training wheels and ride a two-wheeler for the first time. With our safe, easy, effective method taught by experienced instructors, kids will learn how to balance, pedal, start, stop, and steer a bicycle. Most students get the hang of it in one session, but even if they don’t, parents will leave equipped with an easy, low-stress technique. We also invite kids to come back for additional Bike Skills 101 sessions, if they do not feel ready to move on to Bike Skills 103, 201, and 203 yet. Register here

  • Thurs, Sept 26, 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm, Bike Skills 302: Road and Slow Streets Social Ride, Friends of Edgewood Park Building, 540 Edgewood Ave: This is a 4-5 mile ride on streets with and without bike lanes. We’ll have ride marshals who will moderate the pace and make sure no one is ‘dropped’ off the back of the group. This fun ride is also the New Haven Coalition for Active Transportation’s “Bike Skills 302” on-bike class.  The goal is to provide novice and intermediate cyclists an opportunity to sharpen their skills on short, mostly flat group rides. If you need to learn to balance and pedal smoothly, please first take one of our “Learn to Ride” classes. For those participants who know how to ride their bike non-stop for at least one mile, this class ride offers an opportunity to ride in a group while practicing safe cycling skills, such as lane positioning and intersection positioning. Register here
