NCAT Orchard Street Recommendations:

  • This design uses 'Sharrows' rather than a separated cycle track, so it is very important that motor vehicle speeds slowed by design to 20 mph or less so that it is safe for bicycle riders to share the lane with traffic

  • The crosswalks for side streets should include crossing from either sidewalk and use a raised intersection design

  • On Orchard Street near the Chapel Street intersection, the median should be a raised median with trees, not just painted lines

  • Orchard Street needs more street lighting for pedestrian safety, especially at crosswalks

  • Centerline crosswalk signs or centerline flex posts should be used before and after crosswalks to slow vehicle speeds, improve yielding behavior, and highlight the crosswalk locations

Hooray for replacing surface parking lots with transit-oriented housing that will be walkable to Downtown and right next to the State Street train station!
